How homeworking felt like home to me

Wooden street sign showing the intersection of "office" and "home"

I was looking for a change in career after many years as a business manager for a large oil company and various performance and compliance roles. I had a real desire to work from home and once I saw Enterprise Business Support’s advertisement for a home-based reservations agent I immediately thought it sounded perfect for me so got straight on with my application. Nothing too daunting at this stage – just my previous employment history, skills and achievements. Off it went and I crossed my fingers that I would get a favourable response!

I was contacted quickly and after getting through the next stage, a phone interview, I received my interview date and set off on the train from Fareham to Aldershot. I enjoyed the interview and got to listen in to some calls to get a better idea of what the job would be like. I returned back home and got the call to say I was successful the following day. I was asked how I felt and I replied honestly that ‘it felt like coming home’. And it still does.

6 months on – how is it?

Friends ask me, ”Don’t you miss being in an office and talking to colleagues?”  I answer no as I chat more to my colleagues now than I ever did before. My colleagues’ backgrounds are diverse and their tenure with Enterprise ranges from just started through to decades with the company.  We support each other every day.

I remember during my phone interview, my recruiter said she was concerned as to whether the role would be engaging and diverse enough for me.  Well Beth, you certainly needn’t have worried about that! I still learn new things most days and colleagues, who have been here for many years, say that the learning still continues for them also. Plus I have also had the chance to work for other departments, so I am slowly learning more and more about this large and diverse company. I continue to use my IT and analytical skills and I have contributed suggestions in regard to statistics, and am also on the IT committee. Do I have any regrets? No, I have been lucky in my working life and that continues now with Enterprise.
