8 Objectives You Should Aim to Achieve in Your Placement

Enterprise Mobility interns talking about their university placement

Starting an internship or a placement in a corporate environment is a new experience for many of us and it may be hard to adjust at first. However, once you have settled in, here are 8 ways to get the most out of your time in the business.

1. Network as much as possible.

Network.  Network. Network. That’s a key buzz word you will be hearing throughout your time at the organisation. Take every opportunity to network, whether that’s going to internal or external events or joining in extra activities in and around the workplace. A range of events are organised internally and externally, some of these include:

  • Top performer recognition events - at Enterprise Mobility, exceptional performance doesn’t go unnoticed. Each month, top performers are celebrated though special outings and experiences with leadership, recognising their contributions and creating meaningful connections.
  • Intern of the Year Competition - every intern has the chance to win an additional £5000 by participating in this competition. What’s involved? Make the most of your placement year by showcasing your journey, developing a standout business idea, and presenting it to a panel of judges. It’s your chance to shine, share your story, and have a lot of fun along the way!
  • Volunteering - where you can devote paid time off to help an organisation or cause of your choice through the ‘My Purpose. My Time.' benefit.
  • And so many more!

These events are fantastic opportunities to meet and network with people beyond your immediate team or department. If you’re planning to come back to the organisation after you graduate, building a broad network is essential. Plus, it makes your year so much more enjoyable! So, be confident, introduce yourself, connect on LinkedIn and ask plenty of questions! Oh, and that leads me into…

2. Ask lots and lots of questions

Your placement year is all about learning - whether that’s understanding how to navigate a corporate environment, gaining hands-on experience in your role, or developing a wide range of skills. But you’ll only achieve these goals if you ask questions. If you don’t understand something, are finding something difficult or simply need assistance, then just ask! Your manager, team and anyone assigned as your mentor are there to help you succeed. Make the most of their knowledge and guidance.

3. Develop your skills and abilities

Having a placement with an organisation that invests in its people is key to making the most of your year in industry. Make sure you are aware of all the opportunities available to you, whether it’s learning, development or mentoring.  At Enterprise Mobility, you'll have monthly development meetings and there’s also the option to be paired with a mentor within the organisation. These resources are designed to help you identify your strengths and areas of opportunity. Your manager will work with you to set you goals and support your development throughout the year.

4. Try out new things

Whether you have secured a placement as a Management Trainee, or in HR, Sales, Accounting or any other department, Enterprise Mobility is an organisation that encourages internal mobility.  So don’t be afraid to ask about shadowing a different department or branch. It’s a great way to broaden your understanding of the business, build new skills and discover where your interests truly lie.

5. Make every moment count – stay focused and hit your goals

Your placement year will go by faster than you think, so it’s important to be intentional with your time. Set clear, achievable goals early on – both personal and professional – and break them down into manageable steps. Whether it’s learning a new skill, or expanding your network, having targets keeps you motivated and gives your year direction. Share your goals with your manager so they can support you, and revisit them regularly to stay on track. This is your chance to grow – so make every moment count!

6. Reflect on your progress regularly
While goals help you move forward, reflection helps you understand how far you’ve come. Take time each month to pause and think about what you’ve learned, what you’ve enjoyed, and what you’d do differently. Keep a record of key experiences, feedback, and milestones – not just for your own development, but also to help with future job applications and interviews. Reflection turns day-to-day tasks into meaningful growth, and helps you make the most of every experience.

7. Start your university work early

It can be difficult to start a project that’s not due for another year, but getting your university work done early and spreading it throughout your placement year will save you a lot of stress and hassle later on. Speak with your placement manager early on to make sure they are aware of your academic commitments. Ask if it’s possible to set aside time each week to focus on your university work. A little planning at the start can make a big difference when deadlines approach.

8. Most importantly - have fun!

Yes, you’ll be in a professional environment and yes, there will be plenty of work to do, however the most important goals you should set yourself for this year is to have fun! Enterprise Mobility is a fun and friendly place to work where hard work is rewarded.
